Youth Mentorship Program

The Canadian Heritage Breeds Youth Mentorship Program  was a new CHB endeavor for 2017, designed to engage youth and their families, and promote interest in heritage poultry keeping.  Education and mentorship is an important way to help people develop a strong and lasting foundation in poultry, and this program is helping the younger generation achieve success and find enjoyment raising healthy, high performance heritage flocks!

Youth Poultry Education Day
On Sunday June 4th a keen group of young poultry enthusiasts gathered at Sunny Brook Farm in Red Deer.  The day started with an introduction to the American Standard of Perfection, which is the official guidelines by which chickens are judged at shows. We all enjoyed a pizza lunch, and then the young flock-owners practiced chicken handling skills and showmanship basics.

Summer Shows
Youth Program participants got some first-hand experience in poultry show fun and excitement at the CHB summer poultry shows in Red Deer and Vermilion.
CHB Annual Fall Show
After months of raising and working with their project chickens, the youth participants were ready!  They brought their best to exhibit in the Junior Show classes and also took part in the Showmanship competition.

This program has been a great success for all involved - families, mentors and for the organization in general.  It is inspiring to see the genuine interest and enthusiasm of our CHB youth participants, and to watch their confidence grow.  How reassuring it is to know that this worthwhile endeavor of raising standard-bred poultry is being passed along to the next generation!

Thank you so much for purchasing an annual membership. We appreciate your support!
